By Tom Munnecke (1533), Sun, 26 Feb 2006 10:19:30 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) Eliza and I will in-world tonight at 8PM PST, if anyone wants to join me, hopefully introducing newbie Nichole Lazzaro, game designer guru of XeoDesign. And Pam: I was drinking nothing more than herbal tea last night, not even caffeinated. Norbert: re: "If so, I'ld like to buy one -- I can spend up to $9.95 (note: that's more than many people earn for a full day's work). Note (also) that the image appears to include elements of what might be referred to as text -- was that intentional or unintentional?" Well, this is getting into the whole topic of wormholes, connecting spaces in time and space. A desktop in Open Croquet, a game spance on a Nintendo, a web page, Second Life, or an archive could all be linked through a Wormhole Transport Protocol (WTP) identifying the space, scale, time, and location between the mouths of the wormhole. If the space on both ends of the wormhole is "web," time is "now", and scale is "normal", wormhole transport protocol is a lot like HTTP. However, if we want to reach across spaces (SL to Omidyar.net, for example, or SL to Open Croquet), then we add a space modifier to the protocol. If we want to be diachronic and reach back to archives, then we add a new dimension of time (and can only do so to archives that are prepared to accept information and activities from future viewers - what I call future binding.) Figuring out how this all works is quite confusing, dealing a lot with the time traveller's paradox, which I ace by limiting wormholes to "self-consistent futures." Tortoise has this all figured out, just hasn't gotten around to explaining it all yet. 'nuff of this flight of fancy... Are we going to expand to a continent or not?

Isn't the latter a (non)plan for self-destruction? We've already burned out one leader who (self-admittedly) took on too much all at once without a clear, well thought out plan, only a vision. I'm appreciating the pace we are presently growing at and taking in 'the lessons learned' as we move along.

Let's aim to have the island in use every day for some initiative and keep bringing in new guests (hope to see you there Tom....we're in a meeting here but I'll try to multitask). Our working meetings for Camp Darfur are a lot of fun; last night while I was building tarpy things my husband interviewed a talented animator and CG pro who I just "found" at ManorMeta two weeks ago. I've met four people on the island this week who just wandered in, some from ONet but others just for the peaceful surroundings. There are many resources on the island we can use better. The drive-in! Meeting spaces. Drum Circle! Meron, did you ever get to try the jetskis? They're a blast and you can cruise the entire island in less than a minute.

Could add more pictures. They cycle through aphabetically, I could set it up so they come up in the order you would like. I can also set the timer on the scroll ... as it is right now it's too quick to read any great length of text. We could have a number of screens set at varying lengths of speed for the different content.

You truly wowed us all with all your hard work and amazing creations...honestly it was my secret hope that you WERE being paid for it all somehow...volunteering is wonderful but the magnitude of the time and expense you've put in...yes, I've no idea how one can support themselves and balance life with that level of commitment. Is this wishful thinking or is there any way that Uplift Academy or similar could HIRE Sue to continue to lead/coordinate such a positive virtual initiative such as BWI?

First, let me thank all of you for your kind words and support. I appreciate every one! Darlene, you are good soul. Thank you for the generous spirit of your note. Please know that it is not for a lack of graciousness on my part that I respectfully decline to continue managing the project even if it was funded. It truly is time for me to move on, and to allow new energy to flow into the project now. I also want to share an opinion about the future of the island: I think it is critical that it not become an omidyar.net funded project. The reason that I invested in it in the first place was because of a fundamental belief that in order for something like this to be successful, you really need to have your own skin in the game. When people have a personal stake in a project like this, they are far more motivated to be focused and accountable, and great things follow. This is a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate that a content creation platform like Second Life allows people to come together to innovate and thrive in new ways. The best part of that is the fact that, unlike in first life, you don't have to make a huge investment in brick and mortar facilities, raw materials and marketing to create products, services and new revenue. The island project, as I quickly found, can indeed become self-sustaining! I bootstrapped the project, and were it not for doing it solo, I may have had the energy to continue on. The fact that there are now a handful of people solidly engaged in projects there, who know how to build, and sell, means that carrying the project forward as a team will be a great deal easier to do. You don't need anyone other than yourselves ~winks~. Really. This leads me to the thing that leaves me even more confident about the future of this project: As of today, Ray and Jackie Brosseuk will become the new owners and managers of Better World Island. I know that you're all thinking the same thing I am: that these are two wonderfully capable people with great hearts and the energy to shepherd this project in vital ways. They will be commited to collaborating with the people that are already there with projects, and the new ones that will be coming in. Mark Grimes will be developing NED as a new project in Second Life. Whether or not this happens in the context of the existing island, on a new SIM beside it, or on an independant piece of land is still to be determined, but I want to thank Mark for his immediate and very heartfelt offer of assistance when I told him that I would be closing down Better World Island. I hope that you'll all feel as excited as I do about this change of tide. The project could not be in better hands! Ray and Jackie will soon be going overseas to tackle yet another better world project, so I hope you'll all join me in coming around them to help keep things moving steadily ahead as they do what they've always done best: lifting other people up. Blessing all, Sue.

This is a marvellous creation and must continue. I don’t see the fee as being to big, it should be easy to generate this amount of money within 2ndlife, it’s just a case of deciding an ethically correct means of doing this that you can all support. I would not be at all surprised if a couple of 'tip jars' would generate quite an income from visitors, it’s just a case of getting the traffic up, people like supporting good causes. The size of the island is mentioned in the thread, two choices move to next size island or run two islands. Linden labs have no problem with situating a new island next to an existing one, this is how many expanding communities in the game manage the expansion. I am new here, but have been in 2nd life for several months developing my own things, how Sue managed to find the time to create Better World and run her real life is hard for me to imagine! (You deserve a medal). Better World needs to be group owned allowing several people to work on it, promote it, and develop its future. With group owned virtual space communication is everything, you people already seem to have got over that hurdle.

We want to build a stronger base of better world scouts who can help us make the best use of the spaces on BWI! On 3/15 we're planning a mirror event from LA inworld, showing ManorMeta, the PeaceTiles center, Camp Darfur and all of BWI as one example of positive uplift in interactive worlds. Anything this group wants to add to fill in this event? I know most of you are not in LA but I hope many can join us from 4-6PM on 3/15. We'll have SL on the big projector at our workshop space so our guests can see what you've been up to! I'd like to mirror from Camp Darfur RL to SL in April too so let's think about how to leverage our local communities to build more momentum for the island!

I admit to being a bit daunted by the task but equally if not more, excited about the future :) I will be counting on all of your input to help shape the island's future, bring to reality our dreams and plans to really make an impact and difference in the "real world" via Second Life. I can't wait to get started and the bonus is... It is really alot of fun! <shhh don't tell> :) I'm also thrilled that my fantastic Second Life neighbour Nick Ferguson has joined us here on O'net! and look forward to his contributions as well :) Welcome Friend! So here's to each of you and all that we will accomplish. I have a lot of learning and catching up to do! <grin> jackie

I am considering buying an island on Second Life so I can donate land to various non-profit projects that I'm involved in. I've set up a wiki page for this. I will also probably set up a set for shooting video for video blogging and my TV show. If you're interested in participating in this project or have thoughts, please contribute to the wiki. Here's his Socialtext wiki page with more information. I see Marc Cantor has signed up.

By Nick Ferguson (30), Fri, 07 Apr 2006 05:03:24 PDT Comment feedback score: 2 (* *) +|- (net 0 from me) Paying for Better World Island: Now the island is listed to Jackie, I guess Jackie and Ray have to foot the $195 per month? As well as the fee's for their own land holdings. As I feel BWI is so worthwhile, and find Camp Darfur extraordinary, I will be transferring L$10000 to Jackie’s in game account this weekend, she can then 'sell' the linden's for about $35 to help her fee's. This is a donation to help, I can’t guarantee the same every month, but will contribute what I can. Although I was not present in the development of BWI, I feel I can contribute this way, to help keep the dream going.
