Been posting here there and everywhere about our visit to Linden Labs (they love us, by the way). Jeska Linden and Catherine Linden are definitely all ears whenever we have good things going on. Common Cure and In Kenzo joined Zeke, Mantra, Sue and others on Better World Island during a brown bag session at the Omidyar Network Friday afternoon. It was great seeing all of you....we were mostly lost in conversation 1L, showing off possibilities and opportunities presented in the virtual space. They were intrigued by Camp Darfur and ManorMeta, and we flew around the island and saw quite a bit of the progress made in the last few months. Only four of the 14+ in the room had been in SL before but I think there were a few new converts. Haney was a wonderful host for us! (thank you and then some....) Ah, and YES NICK! I love the surreal and fascinating; I know many of the most talented installation artists in the world who are eager to do more with Second Life. We have many opportunities ahead of us.

I was examining Manor Meta when doing the prim count, and it’s made me think about the human conditioning reflected in so many 2ndlife builds. Here we are in a boundless world where anything is possible, yet our conditioning makes a proliferation of real life creations and desires. Why do people want roads and cars in 2ndlife? why do so many users built traditional real life houses, stores, etc. I even visited one sim that had been made into suburbia complete with pavements (side walks) manicured lawns and roads!!! Manor Meta and other structures around 2ndlife take the human boundaries away, let’s have more! Why be conventional, why try and make a virtual reality conventional? Lets all start using our imaginations a bit! Guess i need to loose my human clothes and regrow my elf ears as well!" These are the types of questions that fascinate me. I did a whole series of mixed-media artworks 'Cyburbia'... dealing with our individual desires/familiarity , the bigger picture and the psychology of cyberspaces...

It's been a fun week! Ama asked me to pass along her vlog, which will track machinima in Second Life along with her thoughts and your comments: http://amabecheeky.blip.tv New pieces coming online often! Things have been pretty wild lately.
Here's a great shot of Ama locked in the heartcage @ ManorMeta. In stepped in and calmed it down a notch, and Ama went out to buy birthday cake for our new babies on BWI. I hear we're having a big welcoming party for our new children soon!

Yeah Norbert, maybe not the same site, but the same content. Like the green lights, Evonne. Are you able to change them at any time? Been working on colour combinations for the pieces, but am not totaly convinced with it's present form. (too cartoonish i think) Might go for a more ManorMeta kind of look for the pieces. I also found a way to make my pieces into 1 prim. There's a bit of graphical work to be done with that, but once ready might be a good way to show it to some developers in SL

We'll be working out some of the ownership stumbling blocks in the next few days and hope to be freed up to do a lot more on BWI soon. Start planning your events everyone!! Nick, that is the first list of areas I've ever seen to date - is it possible to transform that list into a series of clickable SURLs? I haven't even seen every area discussed! 8-9pm is perfect - that is 10-11am for me in Thailand :) when is the next meeting? I am willing to assemble a shared calendar if someone just hands me a bunch of dates. how is Skype going? The Burning Man webteam hit limits and we pulled in some new technology today called TeamSpeak that is apparently very popular amongst gamers - anyone else with experience? I wasn't able to stay long enough to get a feel of how well it works. Supposedly it has no issues with 60+ people. whoa - did someone say "creative commons" - woo hoo! just came back from an Asia Commons conference last week and all jazzed up about the opportunity to keep my feet on the ground in Thailand!!! Chat with ya soon - I'll be quite focused on Asia Commons now through next week!

I do not see a CRM module for plone right off the bat - I'd be willing to play with the collector module - I need an admin to install a sandbox so we may begin defining it's workflow. Issues to be resolved (with notes on plan of action) ditto - this is best done with the collector. The burning man team uses it and it appears to work quite well!

We have a few groups that have approached better world scouts for space use: Global Giving is moving inworld and would like a homebase. They will be hosting contests down the road along with mixed reality campaigns for disaster relief, etc similar to what we've done here on ONet. Sombit Mishra leads this campaign: http://www.omidyar.net/user/u492944672/?searchterm=sombit Taras Balderdash runs a beautiful group called the Avatars of Change Monastery and Oracle. He offers the i ching oracle for donations to various nonprofits and grassroots fundraising campaigns. He's been looking for group land for a new orthodox christian church as well, but for BWI I would propose a small spirit house like what you see in Thailand on the street corners. An ecumenical mini-retreat can offer a place to light incense, offer a prayer, or perhaps consult the oracle of change for a gift to the order. Since we were all last together PTWitte has gotten settled and is preparing to launch Peaceful Tomorrows small workshops upstairs at Serendipity. Mantra Fish has been around as time allows and has a plan for organizing the arts center and PeaceGames/ChandiChess. Camp Darfur continues to see visitors sporadically. We have had many requests for video screenings including Andy Carvin's refugee videos and more iACT content coming online this summer. So when can we gather and figure out how to proceed? Better World Island has been earning a reputation this summer as a stellar gathering place for globally-minded worldchangers -- the stories of our avatars lives have been making the rounds and TechSoup gave me 10 minutes to discuss Camp Darfur for nonprofit leaders at their last mixed reality event last week. We are currently the only island providing global nonprofit leaders with space to showcase and feature their work.....we are now seeing more requests for interactive content that will boost our public appeal considerably. The Lindens want to help us promote good work in the world and a half-dozen or more have stopped by in the last two weeks to see what we're up to. So what are we up to? I will be inworld frequently from July 27-Aug 3rd installing ManorMeta(beta) on Brilliant Island for the ISEA/New West art show that Haney posted for us here a few months ago. ManorMeta won the award for architecture and will be featured along with a handful of tremendous conceptual artists. We placed two pieces of art near the Better World Island sculpture as a welcoming home gift. The African paintings I would like to find a good permanent home for; the flexible sculpture will be returned to the artist whenever we can gather again and plan space use. I hope you're well out there in the worlds!

Fundraisers and festivals are a start, but we need to think of maximizing our investment there or finding other ways to make good use of the space. Riversong will give us a better sense of what our current usage looks like tomorrow; right now I know that a handful of us (Mantra, Riversong, Zeke and In) use over 1000 prims on the island. Some of that is dedicated to Camp Darfur now and will be transitioning into the Re*Place learning timeline to work on practical solutions for the Sudan. Other spaces on the island will transition as we create a better telehub and easy ways for everyone to find their way around to great projects. If you cannot make the BWI meeting tomorrow but would like to maintain space on the island please send in a proposal with space needed, prim counts, plan and action items so that we can plan for the entire island. We have a few groups interested in coming in and will be open to proposals today and tomorrow inworld or via IM/PM. We want to make good use of all of our spaces for the Fall Festival as well, so be thinking about how you plan to use your little corner of paradise for greater good!
