The drum Circle at Kijiweni was rockin' last night as the Scouts drifted in and joined the group.

Thanks to all who came and took the time to dream and plan the future with us! We had a great discussion regarding the Harvest Festival which will take place from October 20 till November 1 The Festival will include: Contests: to create much needed BWI items...eg: edible plants..each project on BWI is compiling a wish list of needed items :) Displays: While we celebrate Harvest here we want to bring attention to the areas of our planet where harvest is sadly lacking, where hunger and lack of clean water are a daily reality for our fellow beings. Amusements: A little fun, ice cream, lemonade stand, bob for apples, pies, pumpkins you name it! Even a ride or two...spinning daisy anyone :) Fund Raising: we will have vendor stalls set up and are hoping to raise funds towards BWI tier fees. We will be soliciting items from SL creators who will donate the proceeds to BWI during the Festival. Many more ideas...will keep updating as we go along....we will be reaching out to some of you to help with advertising so we can impact SL as much as possible. Two new projects where introduced last night... Gardens of Hope spearhead by Meron, this project is a mirror of the "real-life' project in Lesotho...check out the "Gardens of Hope" thread. Also Better World Scout Delia Lake is beginning a re-vamp of the Center for Water Studies....her focus of authenticity, awareness and conservation is fantasic and I'm really looking forward to working with her on this. In BWI funding news: Three of the current projects on BWI, Manor Meta, Gardens of Hope, and the as yet unnamed Water Studies project have agreed that they can contribute to the tier fees for the island. I will be making arrangements with the other project leaders in the coming days. This is great news because it is becoming a struggle to handle these costs on my own. So at this point we are covering 1/4 of our costs. This is a good beginning and I'm confident that we will find ways to improve on this in the coming months. A note to all Scouts..I am accepting proposals for development on BWI, lets get this island hopping. The tier cost is $12.18 for a 4096 meter plot per month. I will be judging proposals based on alignment with BWI vision and compatibility with current projects and available space. I really want us to "shine" in Second Life...a beacon for a Better World. So lets get creative...lets DREAM!!!! Building: work began on the new telehub last night as the central Mandala was laid out. In Kenzo and I will be completing this project in time for the Festival. More on this later :) The Camp Darfur overhaul also began last night...I still have to check out the progress and archive some of my elements..but to quote In Kenzo...the idea is: RE*Place Camp...some great things happening here...I'm sure In will keep us updated on the Camp Darfur thread. :) luv to you all,

edit spelling and puncuation :)

Darlene, the tier is paid by Jackie as listed owner, at present most active projects have been allocated a plot with a corresponding prim count, the project then pays the actual rate for the plot to Jackie. However this only covers a proportion of the island, Jackie is covering the rest, I pay her in lindens, which she can then trade via the 2ndlife web site to a dollar credit on her account to help pay the tier.

Most of our partnerships inworld are not on BWI; our work grew beyond one island as we came into facilitating for other groups. We took on new spaces as our work grew and I get less time to visit BWI these days.....it's a bittersweet thing. I invest time and money so that other people can enjoy spaces that I do not get time to enjoy..... It's hard to know how to evolve spaces that make sense no matter where we are in our progress.....I bump up against this at BWI and elsewhere all the time. There are more opportunities than time and space to develop them. I don't know enough about the future or vision for BWI to speak more on it but I'm sure more will be posted in a few weeks.

I'm working at the moment with Dublin City University regarding Chandigo + going to Mexico in a few weeks time working with some incredible people who'll help me out. Just a pity BWI is channeled on 1 person, for there's much good works that could be forwarded.( Then again, thats maybe how it works) I rest my case.

Most of the sims and archipelagos of islands I've seen are run by one person or a very small group of people....the day to day details end up fueled by one person either way. There's common vision, but there's also the grunt work of actually managing space -- that's where SL has given land owners the hard job of cultivating their spaces. Very few spaces reflect a high level of collaboration because it is quite difficult to bring together more than 8 people to do something cohesive together when none have met and each has unique visions to manifest. Communication gaps sink many groups trying to organize decentralized spaces. It is very difficult to organize by consensus with the way ownership is held in SL. I've struggled with this too, being someone who organizes everything by consensus....SL is one of the few places I work where there are recognizable leaders within the management structure. That's very cool to think about....my life is full of circles and systems that no longer require a leader. I wish it were easier to create those open circles in SL. As we move ahead with ManorMeta builds in 2007 I'm not sure how we'll handle governance....you ask interesting questions that there are many answers for. I suspect we'll have to assign leaders and greater structure for our teen grid builds (seeding new work there will require a few teachers -- background-checked adults who are flexible enough to work within rapidly-growing spaces). There are times when real leaders are necessary and in those times it's good to know who is capable of supporting open circles within closed circuits. With adults you can set up a structure and give people freedom to play within it, but with teens there is the added responsibility of providing safe and meaningful places to engage with complex ideas. I do not know what works best for governance in SL yet, but I will certainly reach out and hear others ideas. For now I'm going by the sign above our door, it says NO EGO. Ego ergo sum? I know nothing.

(www.chandigo.com) I've felt let down and had to close Chandigo as it didn't suited Jackie. A proper response while Chandigo shouldn't be on Beter World Island is appreciated. Dominique, I'm sorry you feel you were "booted" from BWI. Considering the fact that you moved onto and into a space on BW without submitting a proposal requesting your project to be sponsored on BW, it put the whole situation rather backwards. When I returned from Africa this summer you had been residing there for several months. So I had to request that you submit a proposal after the fact. Below you will find the email message I sent to you after considering your proposal. I do not have a more "proper" response than this: July 27, 2006 "Hello Dominique, After due consideration by myself and the BWI advisory board. I have decided that I cannot approve your proposal to lease a space on Better World at this time. Let me be clear here, this is not a judgment of your project at all. I find your concept interesting and admirable. However, it is not a fit for BWI at the moment. We simply do not have the space for your type of development. I can see us reconsidering in the future when you have a more finalized product and we can understand the ramifications of it. I'm thinking maybe a version of the game that is more tailored to the environment of BWI. I realize this is somewhat of an awkward postion for the both of us, as I was in Africa when you started using the space on BWI and I assume you were unable to contact me for permission. I also really worried when considering my answer to your proposal that you would take my answer as a negative judgement of your project. which it most certainly isn't. I have to consider the entire spectrum of the development, space, prims, asthetics etc. and also be true to my vision of what BWI should be. Should you be interested, I do have land elsewhere in SL and would certainly consider leasing you a space for your development phase. Lastly, as a fellow O'net member and BWI Scout I thank you for your commitment and contributions and look forward to working with you now and in the future." Dominique, my decision regarding your proposal wasnt' based in what "suited" me. It was made after careful consideration and discussion with a group of people whom I rely on for advice and mentoring. All of these people are Second Life residents, and in addition are respected and long time members of the Omidyar Network. I consult these people to keep our vision balanced and because I do not think that balance can be achieved by the viewpoint of a single individual. Another point that should be noted here, earlier this year you registered the domain name www.betterworldisland.com I assumed from your posts to this thread at that time, that you did this on behalf of Better World Island, but you have never transferred ownership of the domain, or even offered to do so. I have asked Evonne to speak to you about this matter in the past, but to date have recieved no response from you. I am now asking you to do this transfer as soon as possible. I hope this clears up any confusion that you may have had, and I repeat my original sentiments: I thank you for your commitment and contributions and look forward to working with you now and in the future." Better World is not about me or you as individuals it's about the collaboration and networking of a group of people who care enough to want to make the world a better place. It is about taking that interaction and translating it into real world action. I'm quite sure that you can find a common ground to support and uplift the current projects on BW even though yours is not included at the moment. Sincerely, Jackie
