YOu are right, it demands that you become immersed. I read it 10 years ago and so each page is like unfolding a memory but I do not remember the ending ! PM me and we can set up a "date" on SL some time... I am on west coast time now. Happy to show you around and have conversations. Haha, I was joking with some internal folks that I wanted to have some meetings in-world. Hmmm, no reply yet. I actually believe (and Tom has carried this out further in another thread), that environments like SL will be the norm for how we carry out work and play that is not able to be done face to face. Someone wrote that meetings in SL are remembered better than conference calls (forgive me if I messed that up). Makes sense. Peace, P

By Tom Munnecke (1533), Fri, 04 Mar 2005 11:02:54 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) Interesting observation about in-world meetings being more remembered than conference calls. Some thoughts: I suspect that many folks on conference calls are dozing or doing something else during the call (which I, of course never do) In the immersive environment of SL, this is harder to do, particularly if the group is wandering around and talking at the same time. I once had a chat with another person in SL who announced that he was about to log off, so I didn't teleport next to him. We ended up chatting 45 minutes or so, outside of each others' presence. It seemed strange to be "distant" during the chat. I think that the net communications throughput, in terms of words spoken or typed, is less in SL than conference calls or face to face meetings. I think we are moving towards a 3D user interface on our computers - note the research of Alan Kay, (who was instrumental in the shift from text mode to windows mode), and his work with Croquet, for example. How far off into the future this is, I can't say. But the momentum is certainly leaning this way.

By P (CCAL30) (1400), Fri, 04 Mar 2005 14:11:33 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) Hi all, I went in-world and spiffed up the meeting space. Probably needs more comfy things, but hey, still learning...

By Anne Marie Bellavance (CCAL30) (2223), Fri, 04 Mar 2005 14:13:28 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) started snow crash last weekend - my first sci fi fantasy read ever...it definitely needs more than 10 minutes here and there - hope to have longer reading windows this weekend. another fascinating writer!

By Anne Marie Bellavance (CCAL30) (2223), Fri, 04 Mar 2005 14:14:00 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) but did you find any bubble blowing wands?

By Anne Marie Bellavance (CCAL30) (2223), Fri, 04 Mar 2005 14:15:34 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) when can we have our first new meeting place meeting?

By c•a•r•l•a (white) (1330), Fri, 04 Mar 2005 14:15:49 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) i love the persian rug!!! and the bean bags on the ground... VERY NICE nice shorts pam... is that you? do you get to choose your bod in SL? if so, i want one like yours. LOL. btw, since i'll be making my appearance on my seahorse, is there a river nearby?

By Luke Martin (1845), Fri, 04 Mar 2005 14:26:27 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) Hmmm, I'm not so sure about the orange chairs, but I definitely like the beanbag chairs -- or are those giant chocolate chip cookies!

By P (CCAL30) (1400), Fri, 04 Mar 2005 14:34:40 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) Yep, that is me. Look, no hips, no thighs! Definitely one of the reasons I adore Second Life. Those were my working clothes.... I had been wearing my party dress... Well, the orange chairs were there... I think they are default... the rug was there too, I just stretched it a tad... The pillows are all arranged for you to sit down facing inward. Seahorses breathe just fine in the air in Second Life. No worries. Hmmm, I am sure there are bubble blowing wands around... ask Tom.... The candle, well, it was better than the exploding rocket thingy that was there, imho. If I find more comfy chairs, I will put them there... not everyone wants to sit on the floor (note: if ou sit on the pillow, wear pants or a long skirt or your undies will show-seriously)

By P (CCAL30) (1400), Fri, 04 Mar 2005 14:37:17 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) Anne Marie, Snowcrash is a tough first read for SciFi. Definitely needs time! But it is a classic! Especially cool given SL's existence. Ender's Game is one of my all time scifi books...pretty much anything Orsen Scott Card writes but I would start with that one.

By Tom Munnecke (1533), Fri, 04 Mar 2005 16:31:51 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) Well, Pam, for the record, that was officially the Do Something Platform. (hope you took off your shoes before walking on it). The rocket in the center was supposed to have been a Do Something Rocket which fired a packet in a ceremony. The rocket would only be able to be fired if a certain number of eligible Better World Scouts simultaneously triggered it. The bigger the payload, the bigger the rocket blast. I was going to couple this ceremonial platform with the Micro Philanthropy Experiment so that folks within SL could lauch a donation from SL, and then have it actually connect to the MPE "sweep" system. That way, we could mirror the SL Better World Group with the o.net activity which is brewing. This platform could be leased from the Better World group to give other trusted folks the opportunity to launch their own Do Something Rockets. They could find a Better World Opportunity to donate to, contribute some of their resources (cash, reputation points, perhaps Linden Dollars) and then the MPE sweep process would match it. I was thinking of offering one to the Live2Give group, and then giving them some of my reputation points to invest in their chosen Better World Opportunity, giving them the opportunity to become micro philanthropists. this is all in the design stages now, so what do folks think about this idea? (If you don't understand what I am talking about, I'm happy to explain it further)

By P (CCAL30) (1400), Fri, 04 Mar 2005 17:01:32 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) So sorry Tom! I guess I was trying to similate a more inviting and comfortable environment in which to discuss things. Somehow plastic chairs (even virtually) were not very inviting as some other group areas I have seen in SL. We can still do the ceremony... now we have a giant candle to light the rocket... It's a bit abstract Tom. Can you explain it a bit more? Have you been to Live2Give island recently?? lilone made a drum circle... very cool. And it works... sounds take a moment or two to upload though. To start, how about we just do things ourselves within SL. No need to expand yet to other groups (L2G or omidyar.net) that are also still trying to evolve themselves. Let's just be within the Better World group for now. Otherwise, I fear it might get too confusing. I am not sure if Better World has its identity yet? We barely have group members! peace, p

By P (CCAL30) (1400), Fri, 04 Mar 2005 17:02:23 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) But the sharing the rocket idea is still cool...

By P (CCAL30) (1400), Fri, 04 Mar 2005 19:10:22 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) Hi, ok, I fear I may have come across heavy handed... not my intention and I am sorry. I just mean we should start slowly... I am not sure yet that we are all clear on what Better World is. What is it's mission? It's vision? How are we going to start? Do we have a member count? Do we have a workspace? Should we keep identical files here and in Second Life? How do we handle the inworld/real world differences? Maybe we should set an agenda and a time for the meeting and see who would attend?

By Tom Munnecke (1533), Fri, 04 Mar 2005 21:25:25 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) sooorry to you, Pam, for usurping your delightful first construction attempt. (Maybe i can write a script to bounce folks if they wear shoes on the carpet.) OK, here's a another attempt to unscramble my thoughts on the Do Something Platform idea: (Maybe a beter name is Better World Launch Platform): We design a platform to seat folks during a Do Something Launch. The circle is lead by some number of Better World Scouts whose trust relationship allows the circle to fire a rocket. The rocket is "loaded" with a Better World Opportunity which is vetted through the Micro Philanthropy Process. This opportunity is actually downloaded from o.net, so it is a 'mirror' of what is going on in the "real world" online at o.net. Folks on the platform make their contributions to the opportunity (such as a paypal donation, some reputation points, volunteer hours, or Linden dollars). The rocket is launched when the minimum number of Scouts click it (Maybe they are given a magic wand to carry around)... the more activity the more awesome and colorful the launch plume. This signals a party, with animations for dancing, hugging, or whatever to celebrate the launch of the Better World Rocket. A drum circle would be fun, too. The "rocket" communicates back to o.net that the Do Something event happened, and it is fed into the micro philanthropy "sweep" in which Omidyar Network funds are matched against the member donations. So the participants would see their gifts matched (if that indeed is the process)... the system can be fired without the matching process, of course. (This is part of the proposed $25K Make a Donation tool). This gives us a mechanisms for making good things happen in SL, integrated with the parallel good things happening in o.net. Folks could wander between o.net text mode activities and SL-style ceremonies. The platform could be leased to others in SL who would like to launch better world activities on their islands or property. The trust mechanism would work in these other SL locations much the same way that the o.net trust mechanism might extend into African villages in the real world. This would enable other SL denizens to build quests, games, or environments and embed a Better World Launcher as part of the tools they have. This scheme allows us to mirror and integrate o.net Better World Activities with SL Better World activities. I'm sure that Kitto could program this all in no time at all... And I'm sure we have folks who could embellish and decorate the design to make it a really special experience... People might want to launch another rocket just to see a larger plume. just an idea....

By Tom Munnecke (1533), Fri, 04 Mar 2005 23:01:01 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) I bought some drums from Live2Give, and set up a simple drum circle around the hot tub, safely away from Eliza. Its pretty neat, as you move around, the sound of the drum varies... only problem is, there is no one else to play them with.

By Anne Marie Bellavance (CCAL30) (2223), Sat, 05 Mar 2005 05:18:38 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) The launch ceremony is wonderful - and to give Wilde the opportunity to be microphilanthropists will be a very contagious uplift for SL and omidyar.net. I cant wait for the integration of all Better World Activities. thanks Tom.

By Tom Munnecke (1533), Sun, 06 Mar 2005 21:00:57 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) A brainstorm from this morning... What about making the Better World Rocket Launch a vehicle that folks can actually sit in and ride to its destination? everyone climbs aboard and gets launched towards the destination. The price of a boarding pass goes to a donation. SL can't do this, but Keyhole does have a 'fly' mode, lifting the camera from California, spinning the globe, and then zooming down into Africa, for example. Or, the ride could be like the old movie scenes where the paper airplane moves across the map. This could be used in classroom situations, where a class could all ride from their home town to a village in Africa and see what its like. In SL, we could set up African villages for folks to wander around, see what its like, see the effect of their gift, leave note cards, or whatever...

By Tom Munnecke (1533), Mon, 07 Mar 2005 10:23:41 PST Comment feedback score: 0 +|- (net 0 from me) Lars just pointed me to a fantastic site called Mappa Mundi where I found another reference to Memory Palaces that Darlene has been talking about. Amazing site. I also discovered a poignant article on An Internet Prayer Wheel in honor of Jon Postel, who was a mentor who introduced me to the Internet as well as its culture. It was 20 years ago, but he had the most incredible balance between the finely tuned "requests for proposals" which drive the Internet and the openness and the principles of decentralization which they have spawned.

Kitto has one... one at a time but maybe it can be modified... :-) Tom, I think you are on to something good here! It is sort of like a "virtual flashmob for good" kind of thing... wonder how many folks we can add each time we land and take off... Meeting space, take 2:

I tried to change the orange colored chairs but no go...
