It had two slideshows featuring real life projects from Peace Tiles, SOLID, and Partners for Others. Participants were able to touch the blue orbs around the stage and in our other exhibits to recieve information notecards, URL's and a landmark to BWI. On the right across the War/Peace bridge you can see the Darfur exhibit. A jagged path surrounded by jagged images set out to portray in a small way the sharp and horrible reality of what the people in Darfur are being forced to endure.

Here is the Peace Tiles exhibit that Meron lovingly worked on. The Mural on the right is the Lesotho Mural made by the students of the Global Awareness Group at Gulf Islands Secondary School and sent to their sister school, Pitseng High School in Lesotho.

Here is the Center For Water Studies Mangrove Swamp exhibit created by Delia. It was complete with appropriate wildlife. Watch out for the CROC!!

Finally, the Peace Pavillion that Delia and I built for the Peace and Justice Center on BWI. It was a serene place with floating doves and then dramatic picture links to stories from Iraq.

I'd like to see a way to share these techniques. I admit that this is a selfish request since I am a poor scripter. A BWI wish list might help so that we could post what we'd like and then see if there was anyone who; 1) already knew how to do that, and could teach it to the requestor, or 2) already owned one and could sell/give to the requestor. AND how do people feel about regular meetings of the BWI folk? I know it's almost impossible to schedule such, but I think it would be worthwhile if we could pull it off. PT Witte = Bruce Wallace www.121Contact.typepad.com <- been to the blog lately? September Eleventh Families for Peaceful Tomorrows Jackie B said: It is with great enthusiasm for the new year and the potential that it brings for impacting our world that I begin this thread. Better World Island has gone through a transitional year in 2006. It was a facinating year, the birth of Camp Darfur, the griefing incident, the growth of Manor Meta, The Peace and Justice Center, Center for Water Studies, Integral Island, Half an Apple Project, Care.org lab, and Gardens of Hope. We faced the challange of our creator and mentor Sue having to minimize her role because of health issues, and my own long absence to Africa. We met and impacted thousands of people through our exhibits and interaction and had an amazing amount of press coverage for Camp Darfur. We have made new friends and allies and discovered that the ways we can grow and learn seem to be limitless. In the next few weeks, I will be posting about our purpose, focus, leadership structure, and short and long term goals. I encourage you to post your thoughts, critiques, ideas, and brainstorms. Although Better World is a privately owned island, it is the child of Omidyar network dreams and hopes, and to reach its potential it will need each one of us.

We don't have a real office space and we work from our homes from coast to coast to coast. Now, we've taken that virtual existence to a whole new level. We've stepped through the looking glass into the world of Second Life. Second Life is a 3D online world that's home to about four million residents (about 20,000 of whom are around at any given time). If that's hard to imagine, picture a high-end video game with a landscape you can explore at will. Now imagine that instead of hunting down trolls or participating in a first-person shooter, you (as represented by a 3D avatar) spend your time building a home, shopping, meeting folks from all over the world and discovering new educational institutions, libraries and nonprofits. That's Second Life. Much of Second Life is taken up with malling, clubbing, exploring sexualities and adorning often buff avatars. But, an archipelago of non-profits and educators has emerged amidst the hedonism. Islands like Info Island, Cybercity and Better World Island are home to dozens of non-profits, NGOs, colleges, universities and libraries from all over the world. rabble.ca now has a small, waterfront retreat on Better World Island, which is owned by Canadians Jackie and Raymond Brosseuk, and was started by Canadian broadcaster Susan Braiden. If you're in Second Life already, you can find us here. We're in great company there. Just across the water from our virtual abode is Camp Darfur, a 3D simulation of a Sudanese refugee camp; just next door, CARE is setting up shop. Elsewhere on the island, the Centre for Water Studies and the Peace and Justice Centre offer visitors environmental education and an exploration of how the families of 9/11 victims have turned tragedy into a powerful force for good. We'll be using the space to get alternative Canadian news and issues out to a broader global audience. Plus, we'll be reporting on non- profit and NGO developments in Second Life here on rabble.ca. Plus, watch for special in-world exhibitions and guest speakers coming to Second Life soon. We think virtual worlds like Second Life open up exciting opportunities for activism and make our first life more just. We're also looking for a team of volunteers to help us build, staff and create exhibits for our new virtual space. If you're interested please contact Wayne MacPhail. Wayne, Medium Helvetic in Second Life, will be leading an introductory Second Life building class on Monday, March 13 at 7:00 p.m. EST (4:00 p.m. Second Life Time). He also hosts the rpn podcast Who's On Second? about non-profits and educators doing cool stuff in Second Life and his company, w8nc inc. has already created Second Life buildings and exhibits for McMaster University, Mohawk College and the Alzheimer Society of Ontario. Attendance for the class is free and limited (but you must be willing to help rabble.ca out), so please let Wayne know soon if you're interested. It will take place at our space in Second Life. Hope you can join us and help out!

You need to be registered with Second Life to see the camp but it’s like an online exhibition with a lot of photographs from Darfur, a mock-up of relief tents and supplies, and kiosks run by various advocacy groups. You can get free t-shirts and wristbands for your avatar, sign an online petition and find links to more information sources. The underlying idea is to use the intense, highly personal interactivity of Second Life to raise awareness of conditions in Darfur." Wow I"m so excited about this article and our lovely Zeke is pictured! There is a link in the blog to campdarfur.org as well. This has already boosted our visitors to Camp Darfur, and as you know, every person we can touch makes a difference. We can't let up on the pressure till there is a resolution in Darfur

Biggest news! WE'VE MOVED...Better World Island now adjoins Sue Braiden's beautiful new african themed SIM, Ubuntu. This is like a family reunion and we are thrilled to be there :) So many of our projects and goals are entertwined and this brings it all together for our audience. No worries your landmarks will still bring you to Better World.

Better World goes GREEN Better World is the first island in Second Life to join "The Green Islands Project" The project purchases wholesale Green-E renewable energy credtis from real world wind turbines and solar modules, and provides them to islands seeking to replace fossil fuel use with sustainable, renewable energy. One Megawatt of renewable energy credits (a green tag) will provide more than enough clean environmentally responsible energy to power a typical sim or server for a full year. The green tags or renewable energy credits, are retailed at $US 50.00. The project buys them from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation of Portland Oregon. As a result of our participation in the project, Better World will be deploying accurate functioning simulations of 20 metre wind turbines and solar electric systems. WOOT :)

Coming Soon The Peace and Justice Center is building a dramatic and moving new exhibit on Better World entitled "Streets of Baghdad" (more on this tomorrow)

The Workspace has been updated...needs a bit more tweaking but I have added a Calendar section for upcoming events...please check back often and feel free to add to the ideas section.

PT Witte, of the Peace & Justice Center (P&JC) on Better World Island is proud to announce the opening of a new exhibit called "Baghdad Streets". Baghdad Streets, like the P&JC, is an extension of PT's real-life-work to "bring the truth of life in the killing zone of Baghdad" to the awareness of as many people as possible. The maze of streets allows visitors to see images of the innocent civilians who are caught in the prolonged trauma of the US occupation of Iraq. The exhibit also contains interactive elements to stir the imagination and awaken compassion in the the hearts and minds of visitors. Touching some of the wall panels will open notecards and URL links that expand one's insight to the conditions that prevail today in Baghdad. Intrepid searchers will find the "But what can I do?" elements hidden in the maze of streets. PT Witte is Bruce Wallace of 121Contact which has been email-connecting students and teachers in Baghdad and New York City for 4 years. Excerpts of these moving communications can be read at the P&JC as well as the project blog: www.121Contact.typepad.com Please visit. I hesitate to say 'enjoy', for that is not the purpose. I would rather say, "Think, feel, and act." Feel free to IM PT Witte or write directly to 121Contact@bru-mar.com with you comments. I'm not Second Life's greatest fan - problems with Linden Dollars (Why Dollars, anyway and not a new global currency?) and its various unsavoury aspects have discouraged my participation, but I will definitely make a trip to Betterworld Island soon. There are some very interesting virtual world concepts coming, which I don't think people have mentioned. Most have spawned out of on-line virtual world gaming. One is Areae, which is discussed at: www.RaphKoster.com Raph has a view that "Small is beautiful" and the overall structure of global virtual worlds must be small and joined up. For interesting concepts, Raph's web-site is very interesting in any case. I would also have a look at www.multiverse.com. This is primarily a gaming platform, but it is designed to be very easy to programme and design your own world. Multiverse also have a marvellous system where they do not charge for the software. Instead, they charge for the billing, once worlds are up and running and charging their customers. I haven't explored this due to lack of any personal knowledge of programming, but I am certain that this can be built into a money-making enterprise for disadvantaged areas of the world. For instance, a virtual Africa, built and constantly updated by Africans would attract a lot of visitors, if designed from a "gaming" or other creative perspective. Lastly, it's pretty new, but my own blog, www.mmoe.blogspot.com discusses a few issues. I hope to update it soon - perhaps after seeing Betterworld in action.
