A page for IDEAS

Meeting on Better World Island tonight (Second Life), and had the chance to chat a bit with Ava about Pier10. Oct. 22, 2005

Ideas:

- building a prototype in Second Life;
- giving at least a small "green" dimension to the project, in the technique and materials used to build the place, and also in the educational content;
- try to sell trade fair products, as much as possible;
- spread the word in as much places as possible.
- see if we can use http://creativecommons.org principles of open content where it's applicable.
- possibility of adding a http://www.dropcash.com tool to collect real world money.

Other ideas to come, some minds are just boiling around here, maybe yours too!

So feel free to add ideas.

Great to see you there. :)!
I would love the structures to be 'Green'- one of the initial ethical challenges I was having with the vision was that it was a new building franchise...when I am personally much more into the concept of utilizing and revitalizing existing structures in the realworld. But if we can create a truly 'green' architecture and design this would be wonderful.

As for Fair Trade, I'd love to see it...not sure how it fits in exactly with the design of the Pier10 mainspace which is so full of interactive displays and workstations..(picture a children's museum somehow melded with a cybercafe and arcade)...we'd have to brainstorm if/how and where any merchandise would be presented. On a side note I've been brainstorming this for my local area: OLA arts

On SecondLife, I think a good use of BetterWorldIsland would be to integrate informative kiosks which direct you to real fairtrade products and organizations. It is my hope that SL becomes more and more educational. --AvaD

PS- SO glad you are on here...I think this will really help us to begin mixing our minds and working together!

Hi again :)
I added 2 new items to the list below (Dropcash and CC).

Green: it's as green as building with ecological materials to recycle a building that already exist. There are many ways to use a sustainable approach to everyday activities.

Fair trade: if real world products are to be sold, try to sell products that have been bought directly from the producer, when it's possible, so they can be paid their fair value. See for example http://www.peridar.com or http://www.bishopstontrading.co.uk.

Hello again!:) Have you used the CreativeCommons before? I'm definitely interested. how do you think we should go about it? Also, I love how dropcash is used on omidyar.net. What are you thinking of for uses here? to ask for contributions for the development of this project or for fundraising for charities in the Pier10 model? I think it's a great way to Start on BetterWorldIsland, ..basically as an extension of projects from omidyar and any others...but will have to be much more sophisticated/accountable I think for the 10%club and Pier10. Since it's through paypal to a designated 'collector', there has to be a fairly large amount of trust involved- can probably only work for a relatively small network of people, all who trust the 'collector' to do the right thing with the funds. -User:AvaD
